Losing your valuable data is probably one of the most daunting aspects of tailoring your work and life around your computer. The convenience and ease of use a computer today provides, is an attractive prospect which is becoming increasingly popular. However attractive compiling your financial documents and personal address book on your computer may seem, there is always the risk of losing that data. Following some simple steps in the event of a failing/failed hard drive may save your data and enable us to use specialised software and recovery techniques to give your information a second chance.
What Do I Do?
If you believe your hard drive may be about to fail or already has, turn off the machine, disconnect the power and DO NOT TOUCH IT! The best way of saving your data is to leave the machine off and not attempt any recovery. A failing hard drive is very difficult to detect, but you won’t know for sure until it’s too late and by then your data may be gone forever. Some common signs of hard drive failure are:
The hard disk will spin up when powered on, but be incorrectly recognised / not recognised at all by the computer
The hard disk will spin up & be recognised correctly by the computer but the system will then hang during the boot process
The hard disk will not spin up when the drive is powered on – it will appear dead & not be recognised by the computer
When powered on, the hard drive will immediately begin to make a regular ticking or clicking sound
Windows boots, then crashes leaving a Blue Screen displaying an error message similar to 0×000009 etc
Windows appears fine, then becomes incredibly slow with no obvious signs of why
If you encounter any problems similar to those listed above, stop, turn off the machine and give us a call. You may not realise, but losing your data can happen literally seconds after your hard drive develops a problem.
