There are loads of new threats waiting to pounce as you surf the WWW and we are seeing them getting very sophisticated (As in they’ve learned to use a spell checker). The biggest security hole in your PC is the software you just don’t notice or the update dialogue annoys (Flash, Java, Shockwave) so you cancel it (Sound familier?). Here is a little file that when run will check for updates of various oft ignored software and update them for you, its easy just download it and run it – and yes it is safe. I would suggest running it weekly to be on the safe side and if you want to have a go at building your own (Easy) checkout http@//www.ninite.com. Get the file here.

Windows 8 is nearly here and I thought that it was time to get my thoughts on paper. With Windows 7 we have a very flexible and stable OS – a far cry from its predecessor Vista which I think all agree was a complete disaster. This is not meant to be a review of the new Windows 8 just a pointer to whether you think you could ‘get on with it’. Firstly the new OS is much faster than 7 partly I suspect that a lot of the pretty bits like AERO have been removed and a lightweight touch centric interface has replaced it. There are some under the hood improvements as well but these will mean little to the average user. From a security or stability point of view there isn’t much to write home about either some minor improvements but no major leaps forward.

The Crunch

This is the biggie though and a show stopper for all businesses and the vast majority of users in general – THERE IS NO START MENU – it has been replaced by a tiled interface which is next to useless as an interface unless you have a touch screen. It’s great on a tablet but why oh why MS decided against a Windows 7 mode is beyond me. This makes it for me a non-starter and for anyone who is used to Windows of old an annoying painful and unpleasant experience. The weird thing is that in the pre-release versions you could re-enable the start menu and this made it a very good OS but MS deliberately removed this code for the release version – a massive 8008!

In conclusion I cannot recommend this to anyone who doesn’t have a touch screen and even the I would suggest you wait for Windows 9 where hopefully the sales of windows * will have been so woeful they will re-instate Classic Mode.

Getting infected whilst surfing is the most common reason for having to have your computers cleaned by a repair company. People are still way too blasé about security and updates and assume that the antivirus software will keep them totally safe no matter what. Here are a few pointers to making your online experience a little safer.

1. Keep JAVA and FLASH bang up to date do not ignore these apps’ updaters – just do it!

2. Remove all old copies of JAVA only leave the latest one (XP – control panel – add/remove programs – Win 7/Vista – control panel – programs & features).

3. Ensure you have a good and bang up to date PAID for internet security package, the free ones will not protect you.

4. When installing free software Read every step it will probably want to install a toolbar or some other junk software that they get paid for – untick it to choose not to install it (Caution some really crappy software may use a ‘double negative to trick you).

5. If you don’t want crap don’t surf crap – Porn, Illegal Software, Keygen & Serial Sites are stuffed with malware designed to bleed you for money.

6. Be aware on very popular sites eg Facebook these are often targeted by scammers looking for the unwary or gullible if it lokks to good to be true – IT IS.

7. Do not ever reply to a spam email it will just result in more spam – just delete it.

8. Make ALL your passwords secure at least 10 characters including numbers upper and lowercase letters and special characters eg $%^&*(. A good example is FGtY56$£%Hju this would take many years to hack) and use multiple ones. Read our security FAQ for more tips

Cloud storage is a powerful business tool when used correctly. This article looks at five ways that cloud storage can benefit your business – making you more productive and more secure.

1. Simple, secure backups

Cloud storage services make secure backups very simple – with WABSTOR PRO’s unlimited storage space and Desktop Sync Software, you can simply right click on any folder on a PC or server and select “Add to WABSTOR”. The folder is then monitored hourly and any new documents or changed documents are backed up off-site on WABSTOR PRO’s secure servers. It’s a completely effortless process – no need to rely on staff to regularly rotate backup tapes or take them home.

If you need to restore a file later for any reason, you can just log into WABSTOR PRO’s web portal, find the file and click on download – there’s no need to battle through backup tapes to find the correct file in an incremental sequence.

2. Infinite archiving of data

Businesses can collect massive amounts of data – much of it remains unused and ends up being deleted. However every business has situations where this old data suddenly becomes essential, long after it has been removed. With cloud storage you can now keep your archived data for as long as you want – whether its log files, RAW multimedia or analytics and reporting data, just uploading it to your WABSTOR PRO WABDRIVE space lets you keep it and forget it until you really need it.

WABSTOR PRO’s Desktop Sync software makes it very easy to get this archive data online without taking up any hard drive space, but WABSTOR PRO even has unlimited FTP access which lets you upload your files from any server anywhere.

3. Easy access collaboration on the move

Shared network drives and VPN connections are great for a mobile workforce up to an extent, but they’re far from perfect. They’re highly technical to set up and configure, they often rely on a network connection to work correctly, and they require local storage infrastructure to keep them going. WABSTOR PRO makes this process really easy – one single WABSTOR PRO account can be shared across unlimited PCs, and the files you put on your WABSTOR PRO are synchronised between every computer. As well as being stored online, all of the files are cached locally on every PC too, so your team can view and edit the documents even when they’re not online. The files are then updated as soon as connectivity is restored.

Even more importantly, documents can be accessed from literally anywhere. WABSTOR PRO provides a web portal so mobile workers can log in using a web browser even if they don’t have WABSTOR PRO installed. The documents can be downloaded from the web portal, or even viewed and edited directly from the browser using WABSTOR PRO’s built in web applications. WABSTOR PRO has a dedicated web portal for mobile devices too, letting you access all of your files on your phone, and dedicated iPhone and Android viewers are avaiable now

4. Version history

Have you ever changed a file and then realised that you want to go back to the previous version? With WABSTOR PRO you can. WABSTOR PRO keeps 30 versions of each document that you work on, so that if you ever want to revert to a historical copy (or even just review an old version) you can with one click.

5. Simple sharing with third parties

If you work with large files you’ll know that sharing those files with clients, suppliers or partners can be very tricky. WABSTOR PRO makes this process so easy – any file or folder on your online storage space can be shared with one click. You can share the file publically so that anyone in the world can access it, or you can share privately by providing the e-mail address of the person you want to share with. That person is set up with their own completely free WABSTOR PRO account that they can use to securely access the files you’ve shared with them. No more do you have to worry about manually uploading your documents to your own FTP space, or posting CDs, DVDs and memory sticks to clients.

Please be aware that we are seeing a high number of scam phonecalls at the moment. These usually consist of people claiming to be from Microsoft or other large IT companies claiming that you are infected with all manner of malicious software. Whilst this may indeed be the case they are lying as there is no way to tie your computer to your phone number to your name legally without a court order.

These people are persistant and feel free to be rude but never never let them control you PC – you will regret it. If they ring hang up do not try to prove they are a bona fide service as they are very plausable.

The average hit for this scam in the uk is around £150, not a small sum in these lean times, be vigilant.
